Feet – for the Long Haul
Have you ever wondered how far you could run, given the opportunity? How about how you feet would hold up? In the 4th edition of Fixing Your Feet, I profiled 12 mega distance athletes - with each answering the same questions. Let’s take a look at one of those 12, Bob Brown, and see how he managed his feet. I found it interesting.
Bob Brown completed the Trans-America Race, the Trans-Australia run, and recently a 3,000 mile Trans-Europe run through eight countries. Here is what he told me about his foot care system.
What shoes and socks did you use?
I always wear Asics, usually whatever pair is on special offer. Because I don’t get injured I don’t have to wear a specific type but I always go for Asics. For socks, I just used cheap ankle socks.
How often did you change shoes and socks?
I alternated socks every day. I usually had about 10 pairs and changed shoes every 500 miles.
Did you carry any foot care supplies? If so, what?
Just carried Compeed in case of blisters and Vaseline.
What problems did you have with your feet?
I had one blister running across Australia but none across U.S. and Europe. No problems at all. I cut the toe box out of my shoes and that prevents blisters.
Did you have any overuse issues (tendons, etc)?
I have had Achilles problems before but I counter this now by cutting part of the heel tabs off. I feel they are too high on most trainers, which aggravates the Achilles.
Did you have any toe issues?
No, because of the missing toe box!
Did you have a morning/night ritual for caring for your feet?
In the early stages Vaseline between the toes but after about two weeks my feet are like leather so I don't even bother with Vaseline after week two.
Did you do preventive care or taping?
Only use a Compeed if I get a blister (which is not very often).
What could others learn from your experience?
You don’t necessarily need tons of equipment and potions. Adapt your trainer shoes to suit your needs. If you do feel a blister coming in a long race, get it treated immediately. I have seen many people quit races because of blisters when they were otherwise in great shape.
